Expedition fAQ's
What can I expect day-to-day on an expedition cruise?
You’ll spend days exploring on land via small group guided walks, Zodiac landings, kayaking, or snorkeling. Onboard, enjoy lectures, libraries, wellness facilities, and refined but low-key evening activities
Are expedition cruises suitable for families or children?
Most expedition cruises cater to adults and usually have an age minimum (often 12 years or older). There are exceptions, but these trips require a certain level of independence and physical fitness.
What level of fitness or mobility do I need?
You should be able to get on and off the ship and small boats safely. The activities vary in physical demand, but you can opt out of any excursion that may be too difficult. A good example is if you can get in and out of a bath unassisted then you’ll be able to transfer to and from the zodiacs OK.
Are solo traveler's accommodated?
Yes, many expedition cruises welcome solo travellers with cabin sharing options, no single-supplement fares, or dedicated solo cabins. The best time to book a solo cabin is when the itineraries are just released as they have an allocation set aside and this is when you will get the best single supplement, and sometimes none. Message me to be on the database so you know when these release dates are.
What is included in the cruise fare?
Apart from accommodation and dining, many cruises include gratuities, select beverages, Wi-Fi, and some excursions. Inclusions vary by operator and fare class. I will you a detailed breakdown of what is and isn’t included.
How are excursions organised and can they be cancelled?
Excursions are often optional and pre-booked in advance. They may be modified or cancelled due to weather or other conditions, usually without penalty.
Who are the expedition experts onboard and what do they do?
They are highly trained specialists whose primary roles are to deliver immersive, educational, and safe adventure experiences in remote destinations. These experts include scientists, naturalists, adventure guides, historians, and wellness professionals, each bringing unique expertise and real-world research to enrich every voyage.
What camera lense would you recommend?
Wide-angle lenses (16-35mm or 24-70mm) for capturing expansive landscapes and ice formations.
Zoom lenses (70-200mm, 100-400mm, or even up to 600mm) to get close-up shots of wildlife from a distance.

When is the best time to go on a safari?
The best time depends on where you wish to travel, the wildlife you hope to see, and your tolerance for crowds or rain. Dry seasons (typically June to October in East and Southern Africa) offer excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around waterholes and vegetation is sparse. However, green/rainy season can mean fewer tourists and lush scenery—ideal for birding and photography.
What is included in my safari holiday and what will it cost?
Safari costs vary widely based on destination, lodge standard, and season. Packages usually include accommodation, game drives, meals, park fees, and guiding. Some offer domestic flights, transfers, and select drinks, while others may charge extra for bush walks, balloon rides, or premium drinks. I will inform you of the inclusions before booking and set your expectations accordingly for any additional costs you may incur that are not part of the package.
What does a typical day on safari look like?
Most days start early with a sunrise game drive, followed by breakfast at camp or in the bush. After rest and lunch (with perhaps a guided walk or swim), there’s an afternoon or evening safari. Dinner is often served communally in the lodge or under the stars. Some itineraries may feature night drives or cultural visits
Are safaris safe and what precautions do I need to take?
Safaris led by reputable operators and guides are considered very safe. Camps have strict protocols for wildlife encounters, and game drives are conducted by experts. It’s essential to follow staff instructions, avoid walking alone at night, and keep up-to-date on vaccinations and travel insurance requirements.
What should I pack and are there baggage restrictions?
Pack light, neutral-coloured clothing, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera. If flying on safari bush planes, soft-sided bags and strict weight limits (often 15–20 kg including hand luggage) may apply, I will inform you about these in your confirmation. Facilities such as laundry are often available at lodges, but always confirm specifics before you go.
What are the accommodation options and differences between a lodge and a tented camp?
Safari accommodation includes permanent lodges (with solid structures and hotel-like amenities) and luxury tented camps (canvas rooms, often with en-suite bathrooms and private decks). Both styles offer comfort, service, and proximity to wildlife. Some trips also offer simpler bush camps or mobile safaris, where you might camp in remote areas with more basic but immersive facilities.
Are safaris suitable for families and children?
Many lodges and itineraries are family-friendly, with activities tailored for older children or teenagers—though some camps have minimum age restrictions (often 6–12 years). Specialist family safaris may offer childminders, junior ranger programmes, or exclusive-use vehicles. I’ll match the itinerary and lodge with the age and interests of your children
What wildlife will I see, and are sightings guaranteed?
Safari highlights include lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and sometimes the “Big Five.” Wildlife sightings can’t be guaranteed—nature is wild—but expert guides and visiting during key seasons (such as migration periods) dramatically improve your chances. Birding, smaller mammals, and game-rich plains add further variety to each experience.
